As the saying goes, prevention is always better than cure. Vaccination for pets provide immunity against common diseases. Furthermore, many diseases that we vaccinate against are caused by viruses. Antibiotics do not work against viral diseases and they are very difficult to treat. The most commonly administered vaccines are against the following diseases:

Common Diseases in Dogs

Canine Distemper
Canine Hepatitis
Parainfluenza virus
Parvovirus
Kennel cough
Leptospirosis

Common Diseases in Cats

Feline Panleukopenia
Feline Herpesvirus
Feline Influenza
Feline Chlamydia

All of these diseases are highly contagious and can be life threatening. It is recommended that your pets receive their first vaccination once they reach 68 weeks of age. There are also other vaccines that are given in certain situations:

Pets due for export to other countries will also require a rabies vaccination. This is not required for pets living in Singapore as we are a rabies-free country.
Cats in multicat households or shelters may require a feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia virus (FIV/FELV) vaccine.

Homebreeding of pets is also not encouraged except in very specific conditions. However, in the event of breeding, the mother must be vaccinated before pregnancy so that she has immunity to pass on to her offspring. Vaccination is not suitable once the mother is already pregnant. It is important for your pets to get vaccinated so that they do not contract these diseases and to prevent their spread.
